I have to admit it: other than metal music, I’m a huge, enormous musicals fan. I love the feeling and the experience of live acting and singing, and every time I can I have to book a ticket to dive into this.
But why not combine them?
Here’s a (non-exhaustive) list of 8 times that musical tracks became even more awesome in metal style.
8. Jonathan Young and Caleb Hyles – The Greatest Show
“The Greatest Showman” is a rollercoaster of emotions, and The Greatest Show is one of the best tracks. Jonathan and Caleb improved it, adding their own unique touch and a lot of power.
7. NIGHTLIVES – My Shot
If you know a little bit about recent musicals, you surely have heard about “Hamilton”. Full of great rap verses and rhymes, it has won many prestigious awards all over the world. “My Shot” is probably not one of the most famous tracks off of it, but you’ll be able to enjoy its strong meaning in this superb rendition by NIGHTLIVES.
6. Shawn O’Donnell – Gethsemane
It’s time for us to go back in time… more precisely at the beginning of history, to land in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s phenomenon “Jesus Christ Superstar”. The most poignant and profound of songs has been elevated to its highest potential by Shawn O’Donnell.
5. Mark Schmidt – Waving Through A Window
Returning to our century, we have to acknowledge that one of the most promising production has been “Dear Evan Hansen”. I couldn’t leave out of this list its most engaging track!
4. Fraser Edwards – On My Own
Who said that men can’t cover songs written for sopranos? This video below is the definitive proof. From “Les Miserables”, Éponine’s unrequited love is sung wonderfully by Fraser Edwards.
3. alittlejstillz – Part of Your World
Princesses can be metal and still look pretty. Not only you’ll see here an excellent cover, but also a powerful performance. Get ready to go under the sea, but horns up with “The Little Mermaid”!
2. Elvellon – Defying Gravity
Witches have been persecuted for centuries, only to discover that they were only simple women. But the singer of this cover is definitely more than a simple woman. Turning “Wicked” into metal was a challenge, and from the video below we can be sure it was completed brilliantly!
- Nightwish – The Phantom of the Opera
The longest running musical of all times. Performed in more than 25 countries all over the world. Translated in more than 15 languages. Combine all of that, and those unmistakable notes are simply a perfect fit for a metal cover. Enjoy it in the version from “End of an Era”.
