She is the violinist and vocalist of the Portuguese Progressive Metal band, Phase Transition, who released their debut EP “Relatively Speaking” in 2020, and have recently released a music video for the single “In The Dark” taken from the EP. Sofia Beco is a talented musician and a vocalist with a perspicuous talent that we had the privilege of learning more about through this interview. Hope you enjoy reading!

Hello Sofia! How are you and the rest of Phase Transition doing?
Great, thanks! Hope you’re doing well too.
I am! You have recently released a music video for your single ‘In The Dark’ from your 2020 EP. How do you feel about the reception this video got from your fans so far?
The response was very enthusiastic, as it was our first released video. Despite the time interval since the release of the EP, it made our music fresh again, with new listeners but also old ones looking at the music from a different perspective.
That’s nice. You are a Progressive band, but what would you say are the factor or factors that make Phase Transition’s music unique from other acts in the scene?
I think the conjugation of our different backgrounds in music, from genres such as classical, in my case, jazz and metal, and, at the same time, the open mind we all have in relation to other genres makes our music have lots of influences and be unique in its way. The configuration of the band also helps in making us singular, as a progressive metal band with a violinist is still rare.
That’s indeed special. In order to get to know you better, and to have some fun, how about we play a game? I will give you a certain scenario in an alternate universe and you will have to react. Ready?
Cool! Let’s go!
In a universe where you’re the ruler of a country, what would be an interesting law you’d make?
Schools should assure children’s early access to the most creative and diverse activities, as that’s when they are most able to develop their cognitive capacities. Another one would be that financial literacy should be taught in schools.
That’s really important. In a universe where humans are born with superpowers related to their personalities, what would your superpower be?
I find it difficult to define myself but would say self-demand.
In a universe where you’re the statue of liberty, what object would you be holding instead of a torch?
A violin eheh
Definitely! In a universe where the currency is the person’s sense of humour, how rich would you be?
I guess I would live comfortably.
In a universe where the senses of taste and hearing are mixed up, what food would Phase Transition’s music taste like?
Nice one! A multi flavored ice cream that melts in your mouth. Typical phase transition 😛
Thank you for playing, Sofia!
What’s coming next for Phase Transition? Are there any upcoming releases you will be working on?
We are working on new material, and exploring exciting ideas of the group! We have something cooking but we cannot reveal when dinner will be ready yet.
That’s great! Can’t wait to hear them. Do you remember the first time you performed in front of a live audience? How did it feel?
The first time I performed for an audience I was probably 7 years old and playing the violin. Though I don’t remember, I should have been really nervous, as I still feel before a concert.
Have you ever been treated in a sexist manner? How would you have sexism and what advice would you give to young people who deal with any kind of discrimination?
Yes. One time in an interview, I was asked how the future of the band would be if I had a baby. I was a bit paralyzed by the question, but fortunately, my bandmates readily defended me and gave examples of other women that never stopped tours when pregnant or with babies. I would advise young people to defend themselves against any kind of discrimination, read other women’s examples and stories to get inspiration, and never let their sex/gender keep them from doing anything or feeling inferior. Stay far from those who tell you that. Be the example to the ones around you.
That’s really inspirational. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for the interview, Sofia. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for the interesting and fun interview! Big thanks to all readers for reaching this far! Make sure you follow Phase Transition on social media! Have a great day!
