Rioghan is a Finnish musical project by singer, Rioghan Darcy, who is set to release her debut album in 2022. Rioghan‘s music embraces elements of Gothic and Progressive Metal. With her debut EP, “Blackened Sky”, released in 2021, Rioghan started paving the way for her 2022 album by releasing the first single out of it, entitled “Breath”, last March, followed by the second single, “Promises” last April. Rioghan‘s debut album has been named: “Different Kinds Of Losses”.
I had the chance to chat with Rioghan Darcy and ask her about her music, upcoming album, and her opinions on a variety of things. Here is FemMetal’s interview with Rioghan Darcy!
Hello, Rioghan. It’s really wonderful to talk with you. How are you doing today?
Good day to you, Mirk. I’m fine, thanks, how are you?
I’m great, thank you! You are about to release your debut album, and your fans have already got a taste of it with the first single “Breath”. How do you feel about the reaction this single received from your friends and fans?
The single and the video have gotten way more publicity than I ever thought could happen! I’m really in awe from all the love and support I’ve gotten, and I’m totally looking forward to the album release, and what everyone thinks when they have heard it.
If you were to describe what your music is like to someone who has never heard you before, how would you describe it?
This is always the hardest question, but maybe I’d describe it as an “alternative metal mess from a goth and prog metal lover’s viewpoint”
Very interesting. Since I’m a nerd and in order to get our readers to know you better and to have some fun, how about we play a nerdy game? I will set up some alternative universes and give you a scenario and a question about it. Are you ready?
Ok, these are always fun. Hit me up!
In a universe where you find yourself the queen of a kingdom, what would be the first legislation you’d make?
It would be legally mandatory to have compassion towards animals and nature.
In a universe where you can choose a superpower to possess, would you rather have the ability to teleport from one place to another, or the ability to read minds?
TELEPORT! I would need that so much in this universe too! I could schedule a million things for one day if the travelling wouldn’t take so much time.
In a universe where you’re the statue of liberty, what object would you be holding instead of a torch?
Some kind of super glittery rainbowy starry magic wand and also I would have a unicorn with me on the pedestal.
Nice! How rich would you be considered in a universe where you pay for things you purchase by telling jokes?
… Not very! I am pretty bad at telling jokes or maybe they’re just so bad they’re not even considered jokes.
In a universe where the sense of taste and sense of hearing got somehow mixed up in the human body, what food would you imagine your music would taste like?
It would be a chocolate-nougat praline but when you bite into it there would be a SURPRISE inside. Like a raw steak or something.
In a universe where you are a Jazz musician, what would your band be called?
I’m pretty sure it would be Twizzling Axolotls.
Thank you for playing along, Rioghan! Hope you enjoyed this!
Do you remember the first time you performed in front of a live audience? How did it feel?
I’m not sure what could really be the first time but I’d count the time I was most terrified, which was in our small town’s music auditorium in autumn matinée. It was my first time playing a grand piano instead of a “regular” piano. I believe the song I played was a piano arrangement version of Nightwish’s song “Nemo”.
Have you ever faced any kind of sexism? How would you deal with sexist behaviour and what advice would you give young people around the world who face any kind of discrimination?
Sad to say but of course, I have, in the career world and in the music world too. Still, sometimes it feels like when you are a woman, you have to try twice as hard before anyone takes you seriously! I would just tell everyone to keep doing their best, be kind but take no shit!
Thank you for the interview, Rioghan. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much for having me! Nothing to add except; keep your eyes and ears out for new singles and finally the album “Different Kinds Of Losses” released in autumn this year!
