Guitarist and composer Rüben Sykes breaks away from his previous phase and opens a new artistic chapter with the release of “Emptiness ft. Ada Lira”, a single that marks a profound evolution in his solo project. The song not only introduces a fresh sonic palette to his career but also represents the first time the musician has taken on vocal duties.
Known for his guitar style inspired by 1980s rock, Sykes takes a decisive turn toward darker, gothic, and alternative atmospheres. Emptiness blends the virtuosity of guitarists like Steve Vai with the electronic melancholy of Depeche Mode, the theatrical aesthetic of HIM, and the mystical aura of The Cult, resulting in a track that fuses gothic rock with electronic elements to immerse the listener in an intense emotional journey.
The collaboration with Málaga-based singer Ada Lira elevates the composition. Her contribution adds a dramatic touch that aligns perfectly with the song’s emotive core, enhancing the sense of anguish conveyed in the lyrics. Sykes’ tension-filled, lyrical guitar work intertwines with the vocals to create a coherent and powerful sonic universe.
The lyrics delve into loss, unease, and the search for light amidst emotional darkness. Sykes explores vulnerability an introspective perspective, where solitude becomes a space for inner confrontation without entirely giving up on hope.
The chorus encapsulates this conflict with a poetic intensity:
“Emptiness surrounds me, like a cold embrace.
A haunting melody, a mournful pace,
I’m drowning in darkness, a prisoner of pain,
Yearning for a sunrise, but it never rains.”
The single was produced and mastered by Carlos Llamosas, Sykes’ bandmate in Ara-Solis, who also recorded the bass. The rhythm section is completed by drummer Mosk, another member of the group.
The visual imagination of the release is captured in a music video filmed by Vinz Taiki and co-directed by Sykes himself in Toledo. The video presents a symbolic representation of the “inner voice” that emerges in moments of solitude.
