Morgan James is releasing her new single tomorrow, a powerful cover of Stone Temple Pilots’ 1992 hit “Plush,” but you can watch the music video exclusively here today.

Originally released on the band’s debut album Core, Plush became one of the most defining songs of the early grunge era. It earned Stone Temple Pilots a Grammy Award and helped cement their place among the genre’s biggest names. In this new version, James brings a fresh emotional depth to the song, offering a bold reinterpretation that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

Morgan James told FemMetal: “We wanted this tune to be a homage to classic Isley Brothers, with an Aretha-esque vocal. Shifting the lyric perspective on this song changes it immensely and gives way to this slow jam feel. For the four videos we created for this record, they all have a different 90s styling in a black and white aesthetic, and ‘Plush’ is a nod to film noir, with a little danger thrown in to bring the lyric to the forefront.”

Plush is the latest track to be revealed from her upcoming album Soul Remains The Same, set for release on August 8. The album’s concept is bold and inspiring: take iconic hard rock and metal songs and reimagine them through a soulful, feminine lens. From Metallica to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam to Ozzy Osbourne, each track has been stripped down and transformed in Morgan’s unique voice.

Earlier this summer, she released the album’s first single, a funky, horn-filled version of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. That song introduced the bold sound and creative spirit of the project, blending vintage soul textures with songs that were never written with that style in mind.

Morgan James is a classically trained vocalist and Juilliard graduate with a background on Broadway. Over the years, she has built a reputation for reimagining well-known music in unexpected ways. Her past projects include full-album tributes to Jeff Buckley, D’Angelo, and The Beatles. In 2022, she released a groundbreaking version of Jesus Christ Superstar featuring an all-female cast, production team, and orchestra.

With Soul Remains The Same, Morgan James continues to break boundaries and challenge expectations in a way only a woman could. Plush is not just a cover, but a conversation between genres, eras, and voices. You can watch the video now, one day before it officially lands everywhere.
