Quinn Mitzel and Aria Becker, who form 66.666666667% of the band Freeze The Fall, spoke to FemMetal about their upcoming EP The Red Garden, which will be their second EP, set to bloom on June 18, 2025. The band already released two singles with two delicious (yes, this is the expression I’m going with) music videos, based in British Columbia, which I very recently learned is a province in Canada. And just like that decimal in the first sentence could have infinitely kept going, based on what I heard, Freeze the Fall has infinite potential to be an iconic band in a few years!
So, now that you’ve had your unexpected dose of math and geography, here’s a conversation with two musicians worth your attention.
Also, here’s one of the music videos. Bon Appétit.

I’ve just heard “Aurora” from your upcoming EP, and it already feels like something special. Can you tell me what that song means to you personally?
Quinn
We wrote Aurora about how people are all ultimately similar, we are all living in this one world, under the same sky, experiencing the same challenges and difficulties but we forget to look up and understand that. It leads to feeling isolated and alone even though we are surrounded by people who are just like us. The song is an exploration of that isolation. It isn’t about any one of us so much as our observation of a larger issue that impacts all of us. That is a common theme in the Red Garden, us looking at social issues on a larger scale and using the songs to break those ideas down.
Lucy
If you had to explain your sound to someone who’s never heard it before, how would you describe it?
Aria
That is such a great question, we can find it hard to describe ourselves sometimes, in terms of putting a genre box around it. We hope it sounds uniquely like us! Honestly, because all three of us contribute equally to the songwriting process it means we bring three different perspectives and ideas to every song. In the end, each song is different, but the common threads are the melodic vocals and harmonies with the heavy riffs held up by Jonah’s drumming as the backdrop.
Lucy
The new EP is called The Red Garden — that’s such a vivid title. What does it represent, and how did it come to life?
Quinn
Our drummer Jonah was the one who ultimately came up with The Red Garden, fun fact we named this EP on July 31st 2024 – the very same day we dropped our debut EP Thrones. On this EP each song has a character, and a flower associated with it. These characters and flowers are essential to the underlying story that connects the songs to each other. The Red Garden essentially refers to the Kingdom where these characters live and the ideas unfold.
Lucy
You seem to blend heavy music with storytelling. Does the story usually come first, or does the sound lead the way?
Aria
That really depends, The Red Garden was a concept album from the beginning, so we had the story in our minds, but the story is fed by our inspiration for the music, it all goes hand in hand. We never write a song the same way twice. Sometimes the riff comes first, sometimes it’s a drum fill, sometimes it’s a colour or a feeling that inspires a lyric. We just follow the inspiration.
Lucy
Your music sounds intense but thoughtful. What message do you hope listeners take away from this new EP?
Quinn
This EP is an exploration of common themes we see unfolding in the world. For us song writing is a way of looking at the world and processing what we see and experience. We really hope listeners take what they need from it, in the end it’s most important to us that the fans connect in some way. A song never needs to mean the same thing to any two people: that’s the beautiful thing about music, it can be whatever you need it to be.

Lucy
“Aurora” has a more melodic and atmospheric feel. Should we expect more of that side on the EP, or will the other tracks take us somewhere different?
Aria
We like to keep people guessing! Honestly, we don’t ever hold ourselves accountable to “a sound” even on a concept album, each song deserves to be its own thing. We hope each song on The Reg Garden stands on its own and that people will find some unexpected twists and turns in the listening journey. The album comes together exactly how we intended it, but how people hear it is up to the listener.
Lucy
Freeze The Fall is still a young band, but your music feels mature. How have you grown as a songwriter since your first release?
Quinn
Wow, great question, with a different answer for each of us in some ways. But as a group, our songwriting has and is continuing to evolve constantly. Our first time in studio recording for Thrones was a massive learning moment. We had a chance to dig deep, take songs apart, and reconstruct them. We took so much from that experience that we apply to songwriting every day. That said, we also never think of song writing like a formula, that would kill the creativity. The music has a way of coming forward, we follow the inspiration.
Lucy
Some influences shape a musician like a hammer shapes metal, while others seep in like ink through paper. What are the sounds, stories, or artists that have left permanent marks on your music?
Quinn
“Seep in like ink through paper,” I love that. When it comes to our songs that is a great analogy. We take inspiration from everything around us, nature, movies, the books we read, what we are learning in school, the challenges and joy we observe all around us. I think I can speak for all three of us in saying that the marks left on our music come from everywhere and we hope that never changes.
Lucy
The road of an artist is full of quiet battles and small victories. What’s been the moment so far that made you stop and think, “this is why I do this”?
Aria
We have been a band for almost three years and I can say there have been many. It is such a privilege to do the thing you love and to have fans connect to it. There have been moments when fans have shared that a specific song or lyric of ours has somehow impacted them in a positive or soulful way, that is the “why”. Music has done that for me more than once, comforted me through tragedy, or marked a milestone. To know our music is out in the world doing that for someone else means everything.
Lucy
The music industry is constantly shifting. What aspect of it do you wish would change, and how do you hope to contribute to that change?
Aria
I wish the competitive nature of it could be different. There are so many amazing artists in the world and there is space for all of them. There is someone to listen to every song if it finds its way into the world. The idea that people can be so adamant that this band is better or worse than that band is so weird, maybe it’s just not for you? I think all music and art should be celebrated.
Lucy
What musicians do you find yourself returning to for inspiration or simply to lose yourself in their sound?
Aria
Oh so many. I find my comfort music shifts and flows. For a long time, it has been Bring me the Horizon for me, their music has seen me through some of my best and worst days. But today I might need to be connected to Billie Eilish, and tomorrow it could be Alterbridge or My Chemical Romance. Music is a mood, you know?
Quinn
For me it also varies, I listen to a lot of different styles and cultures of music. I really love some nostalgia and looking back in time through music. I couldn’t say one particular artist is my go-to, it’s more about what I am feeling in the mood for. I love Paris Paloma, Myrkur, and Dissection to name a few. I also love discovering new music and artists, love it when fans recommend new listens.
They are very humble people that destiny decided should create these wonderful journeys thru the musical landscape of their story telling.
I have been lucky to have discovered them after the first uploads and us fans are Cold Front and I agree with Q&A on being supportive of other artists and helping each other out. If you don’t like a song or artist that is ok and you should move on instead of leaving a negative comment. Leaving a respectful constructive comment is good and welcomed by most artist i have talked with, they want genuine input and not someone trolling. Freeze The Fall are a band to keep an eye on
Absolutely fantastic interview.
