Interview with Carolina Galimberti (Go Go Ponies)

Carolina Galimberti, frontwoman of Italian metal band Go Go Ponies, brings a unique blend of thrash, fitness, and fun to the stage with what the band calls FIT METAL. In our interview, we talked about the band’s identity and sound, their latest releases and what’s coming next, the artists who shaped her along the way, and her thoughts on the representation of women in heavy music today.

Reuel

Hello Carolina! I’m very happy to chat with you. How are you doing?

Carolina

I’m very happy to be doing this interview; and overall, well, we have so much going on that I can’t wait to talk about.

Reuel

How would you describe Go Go Ponies to our readers who haven’t had the chance to listen to your music yet?

Carolina

We like to call ourselves FIT METAL, a combination of fitness and metal; and this really comes through at our shows. We’re finally moving towards a more thrash sound, if you can call it a more well-known genre.

Reuel

Amazing! You released many great songs in the last two years through your two EPs. My personal favorite is Resili-Hate! Which songs are people having the best reaction to when you perform live?

Carolina

Yes! I have to say that more or less all of them work; each one manages to get the crowd moshing. Resili-Hate is also one of my favorite songs to sing, because it gives me a great boost of energy and power, as “Scrambled Legs” and, of course, “Pizza Pepperoni” with its sing-along.

Reuel

After two EPs in two years, are you planning to release a full length album? Or maybe another EP?

Carolina

Yes, we’re writing new music right now and will release a full-length in time for the upcoming summer tour. It will be a vinyl picture disc with another cool artwork, like we did with our previous two EPs.

Reuel

That’s great news! Can you tell us a little about your musical background? What musicians had the most influence on you growing up and inspired you to become an artist yourself?

Carolina

There are so many, it’s hard to pick one name. Definitely in the metal scene, especially old-school thrash, but also names like Peaches and Iggy Pop for their attitude and irreverence; we definitely have to mention Turbonegro, also for their themes and approach to them, and the Turbo Jugend family, who are always there and ready to support us. If I had to name some names today, it’s definitely Insanity Alert, Gama Bomb, Municipal Waste, but also some cool new stuff like Texas Toast Chainsaw Massacre and Pizza Death, with whom we’ve shared the stage.

Reuel

In a parallel universe where people sense music with their taste buds rather than ears, what food would Go Go Ponies taste like?

Carolina

Well, saying “Pizza” would be obvious, but also right. Because you never get tired of pizza and you’d eat it every night; and even during the day. Being an Italian band that plays mostly abroad, it’s always fun to find “Pepperoni Pizza” on the menu, which doesn’t exist in Italy; that’s why we wrote that song. We also have songs about pasta, about cheese… hey, we’re Italian. We like to eat well.

Reuel

Now I’m craving pizza. 😂 How do you feel about the representation of women in heavy music today, and what do you think can be done to promote more inclusivity and support for female musicians?

Carolina

Today, women in metal are a massive presence and have achieved great results. I believe there isn’t much discrimination because metal has always been inclusive. Of course, there are societal challenges, which are much less noticeable when playing, for example, in Scandinavia. I must say that, compared to 20 years ago, men’s “jealousy” has greatly diminished, and perhaps the level of preparation among women has also increased. What we can do is keep pushing hard without limiting ourselves; believe in ourselves and work hard, as we all should.

Reuel

Thank you for your time, Carolina, and for this interview! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Carolina

Thanks so much for this interview… do I have anything else to add? Yes, go to the gym, stay fit, physical and mental health are key. It hurts, it works! See you live!
