Secret Agent is a Mexican Rock band formed from the trio: guitarist Rock Deliz, bassist Rack Aguirre and Alis Emerson on Drums. The band, active since 2015, has recently released a new single ‘The Spy Who Never Was’.
We had the pleasure to chat with the girls from Secret Agent, Rack and Alis, and ask them about many things!
Hello ladies! I’m really happy to chat with you. How are the two of you doing these days?
We are doing great! Thank you for asking and hope you are well too! We keep busy and productive.
You two play the bass and drums for the band Secret Agent. How would you describe your band to someone hearing about you for the first time?
We call it “Psy Spy Instro Surf” a combination of Psychedelia, Spy movie soundtracks, Instrumental and Surf. An interpretation of our varied influences into a Psychedelic Surf Rock trip.
Rack, what bass gear do you use with Secret Agent?
I play a USA Fender PBass, King Of Groove straps and an EBS D.I./preamp. For amps, I usually use an Ampeg SVT4 Pro head with an Ampeg 8×10 cabinet.
What about you, Alis, what drum set are you currently using?
I’m endorsed by and play TAMA drums, Sabian cymbals, ProMark sticks and Remo heads. I love the Tama StarClassic model and get a variety of sounds from different Sabian cymbal models, the Artisan is my favourite line. My sticks are Pro Mark Fire Grain 5A and my head are Remo Emperor Clear.
In order to get to know you better, and to have some fun, how about we play a game? I will give you a certain scenario in an alternate universe and you will have to react. Let’s go!
In a universe where the senses of taste and hearing are connected, what food would you imagine Secret Agent’s music would taste like?
Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter
Fettuccini Alfredo Pasta (or Pesto) with Eggplant
Alis, in a universe where whenever you drum on an object that is not drums, it appears magically as a tattoo on you, what sort of tattoos would you have?
An electric car
Rack, in a universe where people worship bass players, what would the festival celebrating you be like?
Anything with favourites such as Larry Graham, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Bobby Valentín, Les Claypool, Geddy Lee and T.M. Stevens.
In a universe where people pay for things by telling good jokes and being funny, how rich would you be?
Very poor haha
I would at least have an electric car
Thank you for playing, ladies!
What is one music-related memory from your childhood that means a lot to you?
When I was about 3 years old I vaguely remember jamming at church with an accordion and the other kids
The first time I saw a drummer up close was my music teacher in elementary school that performed with his Rock group. It was very inspiring and captivating.
What do you believe is the best way to fight against sexism and other kinds of discrimination?
Demonstrating that genre does not determine talent and skills.
Educate parents to not impose genre roles on kids
What is next for Secret Agent? Any plans you’d like to tell us about?
We just recorded a new record titled ‘Moros En La Costa’ a conceptual record about social manipulation in the espionage world. The record was produced by ‘Crunchy’ Lopez from the band Lost Acapulco. We already released the title track as a single and in September we released the 2nd single ‘Man In The Middle’. By November 2021 we should be releasing the full record with the 3rd single ‘Loaded Gun’ which is a collaboration with ‘La Gusana Ciega’ vocalist Daniel Gutiérrez and sung in English.
We are currently touring Mexico and plan to tour the USA and Europe in 2022.
Thank you for the interview! Good luck in all your future work.
