Not everyone has the courage or distinguishability to coin a term to describe their musical style. Divided Island have both. The Russian band identify their very unique style of music as Ultraviolet Metal.
We had the pleasure to chat with Alyona, Divided Island’s vocalist, and ask her about her band’s music and her own opinions on different things. Here’s our interview with Alyona!
Hello Alyona. How are you doing?
Hello! To be honest, I’ve been through some problems recently. But I’m okay now. Happy to talk with you.

Your band, Divided Island, describes itself as Ultraviolet Metal. How would you Ultraviolet Metal to our readers who haven’t heard your music yet?
We play music in the Modern Metal genre. But we have a visual concept. Purple is at the heart of our philosophy. We are inspired by nature and shades of purple (the most versatile color according to the Pantone Institute), and I’m singing about this. The color purple is a subtle veiled metaphor in our musical creativity. So if you love female vocals in heavy music, purple color, take a responsible attitude to environmental problems and love peculiar riddles in the lyrics, then you will become friends with our music.
You’ve recently released a music video for Radiating Light. How do you feel about the reception the song and video got from your fans?
The growing number of views and streams speaks for itself. We got great feedback after the release and even a couple of interesting suggestions for the future (but it’s secret now).

In a universe where you’re the ruler of a country, what would be an interesting law you’d make?
Only one? Please don’t forget that I am from Russia, I would have a long list of proposals for laws protecting the rights and freedom of people.
That’s iconic. In a universe where humans are born with superpowers related to their personalities, what would your superpower be?
Oh, this is so relevant to me. I would like to have the opportunity not to waste time sleeping. I sorely lack time for important and interesting things to me now!
In a universe where the currency is the person’s sense of humour, how rich would you be?
I would be a fairly rich person 🙂
In a universe where a zombie apocalypse happened, would you most probably be hiding, fighting the zombies or already a zombie?
This is some sort of desperate situation, it seems. You can’t even die in peace because you’ll become a zombie anyway. Well, I’m not usually afraid of difficulties. I would probably fight as much as I could))
In a universe where you can travel back and forth in time, what era would you like to visit?
I would go to the future without a doubt. There is nothing to do in the past.
In a universe where the senses of taste and hearing are mixed up, what food would Divided Island’s music taste like?
Imagine, we are such crazy guys that we have a symbol of food. Oh yeah. Our music tastes like blackberries! 🙂

What is one music-related memory from your childhood that means a lot to you?
It was December, the first snow fell, everything around me was snow-white and fluffy. I was 5 years old. My mother and I went to visit family friends. And while visiting, I met a girl there. At some point, she just sat down at the piano and started playing something very sad. Combined with this snow outside the window …. It was so beautiful! And I think I have decided that my life will be connected with music from this moment.

Have you ever been treated in a sexist manner? How would you have sexism and what advice would you give to young people who deal with any kind of discrimination?
I was lucky, I didn’t come across this (although in my country not everything is so good with this issue). What to do in such a situation? Do NOT be silent under any circumstances. Contact organizations and social movements that deal with such issues.
