Finnish Alternative Metal band Luna Kills is set to drop their debut album, DEATHMATCH, tomorrow (April 4, 2025). With four singles already out, fans are eager to hear the full record. Not long ago, we caught up with vocalist Lotta, who shared insights about the album, the band’s sound, and her musical journey.
Reuel
Hello Lotta! I am happy to chat with you. How are you and the rest of Luna Kills doing?
Lotta
Hello! We’re doing great, although it’s been a hectic last few months before the album release.
Reuel
Amazing! Your debut album will be released in less than a month! How are you feeling as the release date gets closer?
Lotta
Like I mentioned, we’ve had so much to do, so I feel like the time has just flown by, but at the same time, I’m so excited to finally release the album for everyone to hear!
Reuel
You’ve released two singles from DEATHMATCH so far, “sugar rush” and “slay ur enemies.” While “sugar rush” explores self-doubt, “slay ur enemies” has a more intense energy. How do these two songs reflect the range of emotions on the album, and what other struggles or themes does the album cover?
Lotta
All of the released singles and the songs in the album do reflect different emotions but kind of in the same vein. Most of the lyrics are about mental health-related things and mostly about struggling with depression, so all of those feelings of self-doubt and panic etc. are really tied to that.
Reuel
How would you describe your music to someone who never heard you before?
Lotta
I’d say we’re alternative metal, heavy riffs and big poppy choruses. We’re like an extreme combination of aggression and softness in the same package.
Reuel
Is there a song from DEATHMATCH you’re particularly excited or curious to see how your fans will react to once released?
Lotta
I’m really looking forward to hearing songs like SADIST and love u, because they have that extreme aggression and softness quality I mentioned before. Also, fever dream is one of the most meaningful songs to me, so I hope people will enjoy that as well.
Reuel
Can you tell us a little about your musical background? What musicians had the most influence on you growing up and inspired you to become an artist yourself?
Lotta
What really influenced me wanting to perform in a rock band was Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. I watched their live shows from youtube religiously when I was younger. Muse was also a huge inspiration when it came to making music and one of the biggest vocal inspirations were Lana Del Rey and Amy Winehouse.
Reuel
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Lotta
Collab with Hans Zimmer would be a banger for sure. I love his movie scores to death, he makes so beautiful music. Also, Paledusk would be a wild ride.
Reuel
Great names no doubt! How do you feel about the representation of women in heavy music today, and what do you think can be done to promote more inclusivity and support for female musicians?
Lotta
I think that the representation is growing and there are a lot of women in heavier music than before. I think there is still this annoying thought around women in music that they are all the same, you know If you make any sub genre of heavier music you still are looked at and compared to any other woman in any other sub genre so I think that needs to stop. Supporting each other is really important for the representation to continue to grow, as well as encouraging girls and women to take their place within the scene.
Reuel
Thank you for your time, Lotta, and for this interview! Is there anything else you’d like to conclude this interview with?
Lotta
Thank you! Our album drops on April 4th, and I hope everyone enjoys that and comes to see us play live because we’re going on a tour the second the album drops in Finland and EU/UK as well!
