Calva Louise are set to release their new album Edge of the Abyss on July 11. The multi-national band, based in the UK, have already shared a single and music video for the track “Aimless.” We had the chance to speak with Jess Allanic, vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist, about the upcoming album, her inspirations, and more.
Reuel
Hello Jess! I am happy to chat with you. How are you and the rest of Calva Louise doing?
Jess Allanic
We’re doing great, thanks so much!
Reuel
Your new album, Edge of the Abyss, is coming out in July! How are you feeling as the release date approaches?
Jess Allanic
We’re feeling excited and at the same time working a lot to finish all the new videos for the release!
Reuel
What are the emotions you are hoping people would be left with after listening to Edge of the Abyss?
Jess Allanic
We hope people can feel positivity and motivation after listening to the album!
Reuel
Aside from working on your music, you also directed the music videos for the singles you released from the album. Do you feel that being so deeply involved in the music helped you bring its visual world to life more naturally?
Jess Allanic
Absolutely, from the beginning I have based the video scripts on the story I began writing and illustrating at age 10, but with each new experience I have refined those scripts to convey the Calva Louise story.

Reuel
Which unreleased track from the album are you most excited for fans to hear, and why?
Jess Allanic
El Umbral because I feel it’s the song that encapsulates every aspect of the album!
Reuel
Can you tell us a little about your musical background? What musicians had the most influence on you growing up and inspired you to become an artist yourself?
Jess Allanic
I have many varied influences, I would say mainly System of a Down, QOTSA, Muse, as well as Latin American artists such as Calle 13, Simón Diaz and Molotov.
Reuel
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Jess Allanic
Simón Diaz as he’s always been musically present in all the stages of my life, I have loved his music since I was little!
Reuel
How do you feel about the representation of women in heavy music today, and what do you think can be done to promote more inclusivity and support for female musicians?
Jess Allanic
Most of my favorite bands at this time have incredible women kicking ass, but I think the industry needs to change more rapidly to become more sincerely inclusive.
Reuel
Thank you for your time, Jess, and for this interview! Is there anything else you’d like to conclude this interview with?
Jess Allanic
Thank you so much for the questions and we cannot wait to play all our new songs live very soon!
