Interview with Molly Rennick of Living Dead Girl Ahead of the Release of Conspiracy

Canadian metal band Living Dead Girl, fronted by Molly Rennick, are set to release their second album, Conspiracy, on October 10th, 2025. Following their debut Exorcism, the band continues to grow their presence in the heavy music scene. In this interview, Molly Rennick talks about the upcoming album and her journey as an artist.

Reuel

Hello Molly! I’m very happy to catch up with you. How are you doing?

Molly Rennick

I’m doing great, very excited to be gearing up to release a new album!

Reuel

You will release your second album next month! How is the excitement building as the release day comes closer?

Molly Rennick

Being in the buildup towards a new album release is the best time as an artist; it’s like a child waiting for Christmas morning, haha. I can’t wait for the world to hear this new chapter of Living Dead Girl, and I love all the creative projects I get to do along the way like creating music videos, photoshoots, designing new merch, etc!

Reuel

Your fans have already had a taste of CONSPIRACY through the singles Poison Me and We’re All Be Dead. What about these two tracks made them the right choice to release as singles and music videos?

Molly Rennick

Poison Me really stood out just as an all around epic song; I love every song we’ve written and recorded, of course, but there are still always going to be ones that just stand out in a collection and Poison me felt like “the one”–the one that I wanted everybody to hear first. I felt like Poison Me’s vibe really set the tone for this new era. Then with We’ll All Be Dead, it’s really the catchy chorus and high energy that made me think “THIS is a single”–the chorus is so ridiculously catchy it gets stuck in your head for hours, and I love the bluntness of the lyrics, I think it’s a memorable track. Both were really fun to create music videos for too; when I listened to them, I could picture the visuals immediately.

Reuel

What themes and concepts inspired the songs in CONSPIRACY?

Molly Rennick

Where EXORCISM was an album really about my own personal experiences and feelings, like, “this is what happened to me”, I think CONSPIRACY is the more grown-up version of that; it’s more about my outlook on the world and life, and how once I’ve seen certain sides of things and learned more, I can’t unsee it, like “this is what I’m seeing around me”. It talks about evil in different forms, mass psychosis, being aware of what is happening in the world, and more.

Reuel

Can you tell us a little about your musical background? What musicians had the most influence on you growing up and inspired you to become an artist yourself?

Molly Rennick

The first musician who comes to mind when I’m asked about influence is Avril Lavigne; she grew up in a small town in Ontario just like me, and I loved how she stood out among the other female pop singers of her time; she played guitar, wrote her own lyrics, and had a lot more edge than the others. I was always really drawn to her music and to this day her vocals really inspire my clean singing as well. As for my screaming, my very first influence was Marilyn Manson; I probably did a little damage to my vocal chords as a teen trying to sing raspy like him, haha. Then I discovered In This Moment around age 16 and really started trying to do that vocal fry style of singing and screaming, and that’s when all the pieces came together. I wanted to be able to sing very bright and clean like Avril, but the grit of Manson and Maria Brink.

Reuel

You found great success with your debut, and with your sophomore album on the horizon, your fanbase is bound to grow even more. What core messages or values do you hope your fans take from your music, and what emotions would you like them to associate with Living Dead Girl?

Molly Rennick

Honestly, even when we write music about serious topics, I always want Living Dead Girl to be the “fun” band. I like to have really upbeat, high-energy music, I want our shows to be a place where people aren’t afraid to both mosh and dance in the same set, I like that we’re kind of a “fuck you” to metal gatekeepers. Our music is heavy, but we’re not so serious and doom and gloom, we like to have fun and I hope that people feel that kind of positivity in our music and at our shows.

Reuel

How do you see the current representation of women in heavy music, and what steps do you feel could help foster greater inclusivity and support for female musicians?

Molly Rennick

We are seeing more and more women in this genre, which is incredible. I’m glad that more female singers are choosing metal as their genre! It’s great to see a whole new generation of younger girls choosing to pursue rock music, and we’ve had so many great role models before us paving the path for us. I feel like, despite the rising popularity in female-fronted bands there is still this stigma and judgment towards us that doesn’t exist towards male vocalists and it’s very hypocritical. We get heavily judged when we show a bit of skin, but no one cares when a male vocalist goes on stage fully shirtless (like, come on, at least my outfit was a cool outfit with some thought and creativity put into it—that took effort! Wearing JUST pants isn’t a cool costume, haha.) But then we also get criticized and sexualized when we’re fully clothed—so there’s no “winning” as a female artist, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t, and we seem to get pit against one another and judged more heavily than men do. All we can do about it is continue doing our thing and do it how we want to. I don’t care if seeing one inch of skin on my boob offended you or made you choose to call me degrading names, I’m comfortable and I’m going to keep wearing this outfit! You have to have a really thick skin to be a female performer because the world isn’t always kind.

Reuel

Thank you for your time, Molly!
