Julia Lauren Bullock, known for fronting The Foxies and playing bass with The Dead Deads, has joined the live lineup of Kalamity Kills, just as the band released their latest album this September. With this new adventure underway, we caught up with Julia to talk about the experience, the challenges women still face in the music scene, and more.
Reuel
Hello Julia! I am very excited to chat with you. How are you doing?
Julia Lauren Bullock
I am doing so very well thank you for asking.
Reuel
You joined Kalamity Kills as part of the live lineup. What drew you to the band and how did that first connection come about?
Julia Lauren Bullock
I have been friends with Jamey and his wife Christie for years. They saw that I played bass for The Dead Dead’s and Jamey hit me up and said “Hey…wanna add another band to your roster?” and I was sold!
Reuel
As a bassist and vocalist, you’re holding down rhythm and harmony live. What’s your process for balancing those roles during high-intensity shows?
Julia Lauren Bullock
You can’t think too much. You just have to feel. Because ultimately at the end of the day, if you know what you’re supposed to do, you’ll be fine. Our minds love to be the one’s to psyche us out. And I historically always make mistakes when I overthink.
Reuel
What was your first impression of the band’s self-titled album? Was there a particular song that hit you hardest?
Julia Lauren Bullock
My first impression; well I heard their cover of “I still believe” and about shat myself because LOST BOYS is my favorite movie! Then I quickly fell in love with all of the songs they have. My favorite one to play as of now is that one and “Dark Secrets.”
Reuel
You’ve performed in other musical projects before. What feels different or special about performing with Kalamity Kills?
Julia Lauren Bullock
With Kalamity, I am able to work on my bass skills in ways I never have before. There are lots of intricate parts to the music. I’m getting a crash course in Bass playing for sure since I still consider myself new at it!
Reuel
How do you prepare mentally or emotionally for a live show with a band this intense?
Julia Lauren Bullock
You gotta study! Know your shit! And stretch. lol
Reuel
As a woman in hard rock and metal have you faced specific challenges on stage or behind the scenes? How do you push through them?
Julia Lauren Bullock
I think being a woman in ANY field, we feel like we have to work hard to be taken seriously. I know for me personally, I have to remind myself that I don’t have to PROVE myself to anyone; I’m doing this for me, because it makes me happy, and that I’m here because I’m talented and I deserve to be here.
Reuel
Are there any songs in the setlist where you feel like you completely lose yourself in the best way?
Julia Lauren Bullock
I STILL BELIEVE and DARK SECRETS. I love those so much. Those were the first two I learned and they are so fun to play and sing to.
Reuel
Thanks so much for your time, Julia. It’s been great chatting with you. Is there anything you’d like to add?
Julia Lauren Bullock
Just a thank you to all of you for having me!
