We had the pleasure of speaking with Alexandra Revontulet of Alexandrite, a musician whose talent we’ve admired across multiple projects. Now, she’s channeling her creativity into a new band and an eagerly anticipated album. In our conversation, Alexandra shared her thoughts on the upcoming release, reflected on the recently unveiled singles, and offered a glimpse into her perspective on music and the scene that inspires her.
Reuel
Hello Alexandra! I am very excited to chat with you. How are you doing?
Alexandra Revontulet
I’m good, just really busy as always. If I’m not working on a new single, then it’s the video, or the artwork, or whatever my sleep-deprived brain comes up with 🙂
Reuel
Sounds intense, but amazing work! You will be releasing your new album Ad Astra later this year! How is the preparation going, and how are you feeling about this release?
Alexandra Revontulet
Honestly, I’m pretty tired. I’ve been working on this album non-stop for more than two years now, from arranging the songs and recording the parts to mixing and then making the videos. Some of the songs are even older than that, so it feels like I’ve been living with Ad Astra for ages. I’m really looking forward to the release, mostly cause then I’ll be able to finally get some rest 🙂 Though of course promotion is waiting right around the corner!
Reuel
Wow, that’s an insane amount of work! Several singles from your upcoming album are already out. How have fans and the media responded so far?
Alexandra Revontulet
Well, luckily, no one’s told us to quit music yet, so I’d say it’s been pretty good! 🙂 Our long-time listeners have been truly supportive, especially our patrons, since for them these songs are already familiar as they’ve been following the songs’ evolution from the very start. But it’s always super nice to hear from new fans who are just discovering our music.
Reuel
That’s amazing! How will “Ad Astra” be different from your previous projects and releases?
Alexandra Revontulet
Of course, as time goes by, everything changes, including me. I’ve been growing as a person and as an artist over the years, so naturally it’s going to be different from anything I’ve done before. But I think fans will recognize that it’s still me, just a little older and wiser, hopefully 😉 The album itself is really a ‘long-play,’ with 14 original tracks and 2 bonus versions.
Reuel
What themes and concepts helped shape the songs of “Ad Astra”?
Alexandra Revontulet
I always say there are really only three themes for all art: love, life, and death. The same rule applies here 🙂
Reuel
You collaborated with Liv Kristine on your single Cold Stars. What was it like working with such an iconic and experienced musician?
Alexandra Revontulet
Liv is a super nice person, and it’s been a true pleasure working with her. She brought her unique light and vision to the song, adding touches I hadn’t even thought of. You can compare Cold Stars and Cold Stars (Solo version) to hear all the differences she contributed 😉
Reuel
You yourself have great experience, having been part of different projects for a while now. How would you compare the music scene today with how it was when you first started making music professionally?
Alexandra Revontulet
Of course, algorithms play a huge role now, which is why musicians have to constantly release new singles, videos, and other content. Unfortunately, those who don’t, often don’t get pushed to new listeners, or even to the ones who already follow them. That’s why, if you like an independent artist, it’s super important to follow them not just on socials and Spotify, but also to subscribe to their newsletter (which, by the way, we have at alexandritevoice.com), Patreon, or other platforms that actually deliver updates without filtering them through what the algorithm thinks you should see.
Reuel
What musicians have influenced you most growing up?
Alexandra Revontulet
Like we’ve established in the previous questions, I’ve been around for quite a while, so I can barely remember who I listened to growing up 🙂 Seriously, though, I started making music because of HIM, Nightwish, Lacrimosa, The 69 Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy, and many other Symphonic and Gothic metal bands, and I still love them.
Reuel
Iconic! And what modern musicians do you enjoy listening to nowadays?
Alexandra Revontulet
The irony of being a full-time musician (which usually happens because, long ago, you fell in love with music thanks to your favorite artists) and doing everything that concerns your music yourself, is that you actually don’t have much time or ‘ear-power’ left to listen to anything else. That said, I do try to find time to listen to my friends’ bands and whatever’s blowing up the charts right now.
Reuel
Thanks so much for your time, Alexandra. It’s been great chatting with you. Is there anything you’d like to add?
Alexandra Revontulet
Thanks so much for having me! A huge thank you to everyone supporting Ad Astra so far. If you want to stay updated, follow us on socials (we’re @alexandritevoice almost everywhere) and subscribe to our newsletter at alexandritevoice.com. For those who want to support us even more, our crowdfunding campaign is running right now (https://ko-fi.com/alexandritevoice/commissions). Pre-ordering through it might be the only way to get a physical copy of Ad Astra in the near future, and you can also get exclusive merch and unique items like lyric books and handwritten lyrics, while helping make the album’s release possible.
