Diabolisches Werk, a German death/thrash metal band, was one of the many interesting acts that played at Wacken Open Air this year. We talked with them after their performance about music, loneliness and women in metal.

Hello everybody and thank you for being here. How are you doing today?

Very fine, very good.

Benedetta

Thank you so much once again for being here. How does it feel to play at Wacken in the anniversary edition of the festival?

Diabolisches Werk

Hot. Well, I mean, that was obvious. Of course it’s hot. I think in Wacken it’s not obvious that it’s hot, you know. Because last year, for example, it was not hot. Absolutely not. So we prefer hot in the anniversary.

Benedetta

Absolutely, yes. So, since of course you have a lot of experience playing live shows and you have experience in the studio, do you think that the life of an artist is lonely?

Diabolisches Werk

Not for us. I mean, I have my friends right here, so I’m not lonely. Sometimes maybe a bit boring because of the waiting. We had stage time today at 12 or something, so we can prepare everything. And show time was at 2. We were finished with everything at maybe like 12.30 with soundcheck and everything, and then it was waiting again. So we waited more than the actual show was long, you know. But I think it paid off on stage and stuff. It was fucking amazing. So there were so many people, more than we expected. And it was really easy to interact and it was good vibe.

Benedetta

Has it ever happened to you that sometimes Krüger was treated differently than the rest of you at a show or at a club or anywhere?

Diabolisches Werk

I mean, I don’t know if somebody talks to me, if he talks to me instead of her. But of course, I don’t know if he thinks like that. But it never happened to me that anybody talked about it like that.

Benedetta

Do you think that there’s going to be some sort of equality between men and women in the metal industry at some point?

Diabolisches Werk

Actually, I think, if you look at the history of metal, I think there were always like women in the scene. Because you have, I think the most popular of course is Doro, the metal queen, but you also had others in the underground. I think it’s something that in the metal scene, we always had this. Of course, back in the days, it was more like boys’ music.

Benedetta

Krüger, what do you think about this topic of equality between men and women in metal?

Krüger

I think there are bands only with women playing, and so I think we are on our way.
