Australian alternative duo Mystic Tea Party have released their debut album, Slipstream, on October 30, 2026. The Melbourne-based duo, Blume and Sebastian Walach, do almost everything themselves, from writing the songs to recording, producing, and mixing them. Their music takes inspiration from ’90s and 2000s alternative rock, trip-hop, and electronica, and Slipstream brings these influences together across 11 tracks, giving us a first proper introduction to the band’s sound.
Slipstream is a great introduction to Mystic Tea Party’s music, with a dark atmosphere that takes different forms throughout the album. The melodies become richer, the beats stronger, and the guitars occasionally take things into alternative rock territory. Even when the music becomes louder and more energetic, it never loses the dark character that defines its sound. The different instruments work brilliantly together, creating some excellent melodies and arrangements without making the music feel too crowded.
If you’re into any of these artists, this album should be on your radar.

The artwork is simple but beautiful, with a flower floating above a hand in the middle of darkness. It gives a peaceful and mysterious feeling, while the contrast between the softness of the flower and the dark surroundings reflects the music on Slipstream really well.
“Honey”
This song stands out from the rest of the album while perfectly complementing it. It opens up with a silky tune leading into a dreamy riff, with Blume’s vocals taking charge to deliver one of the best melodies on Slipstream.
Slipstream has some excellent musical arrangements, with the beats and bass giving the songs their dark character while the melodies bring a softer, sometimes dreamy feeling to the music. What’s particularly good is how the band manage the changes in intensity, allowing the songs to develop naturally instead of rushing into their louder moments. The guitars are used nicely too, adding more power when needed without taking attention away from the rest of the music. There’s also a lot of variety in the sounds and melodies, making the album rich and interesting without losing the atmosphere that connects everything together.
Blume’s vocals are excellent throughout Slipstream, and a big reason why the album has such a distinct atmosphere. Their singing has a cold, dark tone that fits the music perfectly, but there’s much more to the performance than that. Blume can express so much emotion without having to push their voice to its limits, and even the quieter parts have a strong effect. The vocals also adapt beautifully as the music changes, whether the songs become more intense or take a softer direction.
Slipstream deals with some complicated human emotions, especially when it comes to love, desire, and how we feel about ourselves and others. The lyrics explore affection, obsession, insecurity, and control, and how pleasure and pain can sometimes go hand in hand. The music also does a great job of expressing these feelings, with the beautiful melodies and dark atmosphere adding so much to what the lyrics are saying.
Mystic Tea Party highlight the beauty of darkness with their beautiful melodies, great vocals, and brilliant arrangements, delivering an impressive debut.
