Resurgence is dropping this month and, with the Deep Blue European Tour on the horizon, Future Palace is stepping into an exciting new chapter. We had this conversation with vocalist Maria Lessing to discuss the album’s emotional themes, her development as a vocalist, and the changes shaping the band’s future.

Hello Maria! I’m very happy to be talking with you. How are you doing?
Maria Lessing
I am doing fine, thanks for having me! I am excited for our album release next week + playing at Wacken.
Reuel
This is so exciting! You’re releasing your fourth album at the end of this month. How would you describe this new album?
Maria Lessing
I feel like this album is the most thematically connected album we have ever done. If it’s about the symbols used in the lyrics or visuals, the sound, or also the story it tells about a healing journey, it all flows together nicely, and we are happy how it turned out.

It’s been about six years since your debut album came out. When you look back at where you started compared to Resurgence today, how do you feel your sound has evolved over the years?
Maria Lessing
First of all I feel like my vocals have improved a lot since that album, which makes me happy, because sometimes it feels like you’re not getting better at all. We also got heavier but overall kept our Future Palace stylistic. We’re still always open to new genres and ideas but love keeping some nostalgia in our sound.

Music has a unique ability to touch humans at an emotional level. What emotions do you think people will be left with after they listen to Resurgence?
Maria Lessing
I hope they feel like they can relate and let out their emotions at a safe place but also – and most importantly, what this album is supposed to convey, is seeing the power of yourself, seeing the power of change! We can change anytime and improve ourselves and our lives and maybe even some aspects of the world. We should not underestimate our potential and power.

Outside of Germany, this tour is taking you all over Europe. Which specific countries or cities are you most excited to hit on the Deep Blue Tour, either because you’ve never played there before, or because of a memorable past show?
Maria Lessing
I am overall happy to tour Europe again since our last European tour was about 2 years ago. I am really excited for the cities that we haven’t played at yet of course which are Leeds (UK), Lyon (France), Sint-Niklaas (Belgium) and Jyväsklyä (Finland).

You’ve already given fans a taste of Resurgence with singles like ‘Resurge’ and ‘Deep Blue’. But out of the remaining unreleased tracks, are there any specific songs you are most eager, or maybe a little nervous, to see the crowd’s reaction to once the album drops?
Maria Lessing
With this album, we had a really hard time choosing the singles, because we liked all the songs so much and felt like many of them had a huge single potential, so I am just happy to release them all finally. Songs like “The Shades” or “Disintegrate” feel like singles to me. I am also happy about “Ebb and Flow” since I have written the base of the song on my acoustic guitar, which was important and special to me. Songs like “Nightfall” feel different and very personal. In general, every song is special to us.

If the sense of taste and hearing were mixed up together, what food do you imagine Future Palace’s music would taste like?
Maria Lessing
I think we are a plate of pasta, and you can decide what sauce and veggies you wanna have with it every time you eat it, because we love changing things up but having a solid base.
