Interview with Kirsten Jørgensen (Evig Natt)

Apr 4, 2025

With their fourth studio album on the horizon, Evig Natt have already unveiled three captivating singles, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the release of Vaketimen. We had the chance to catch up with the Norwegian band’s frontwoman, Kirsten Jørgensen, to talk about the band’s evolution, their upcoming album, and her personal take on today’s music scene.

Reuel

Hello Kirsten! I am glad to chat with you. How are you and the rest of Evig Natt doing?

Kirsten Jørgensen

Hello! Me and the boys are doing fine! Thank you for asking!

Reuel

Congratulations on the new singles! “At The End Of The Night” is quite magical! How are you feeling about the way your fans reacted to the new music you’ve released?

Kirsten Jørgensen

Thank you so much! We are very happy with the response to our three new singles and videos. They are all very different in character and feel. However, they appear to have landed very well within the trusted Evig Natt camp and with new listeners too. Especially “At The End Of The Night” which has received a lot of positive feedback and seems to be appealing to an even wider audience than we are used to.

Reuel

With your fourth album set for release this year, Evig Natt has firmly established a signature sound in Metal. How has your music evolved from the early days of the band to Våketimen?

Kirsten Jørgensen

Going from two steady band members, on our debut album “I am Silence”, where Stein wrote all the music and I wrote the vocal melodies, to a full line-up of five people on “Darkland”, made quite the change to Evig Natt’s sound. With more members contributing to songwriting, and different styles of playing added to the mix, it was the first step towards “our” signature sound. Personally, I feel like we cemented our sound on our third release “Evig Natt”, where Arne Marton was added on guitars, Stein took over vocal duties once again and I got more involved in the production side of it. It took three albums figuring it all out, but here we are… about to release our fourth album, “Vaketimen”, and it’s got that familiar Evig Natt signature, just a little more refined, if you can call Evig Natt refined.

Reuel

Brilliant! What a path! Your debut album I Am Silence is 18 years old! Most humans consider this the age of adulthood. What are your feelings when you listen to or perform songs from your debut album? How do you feel these songs have aged?

Kirsten Jørgensen

Oh wow! Yes, indeed. We have an adult on our hands. It doesn’t feel like we recorded it that long ago. I don’t go back and listen very often, but when I do it reminds me that we have come a long way. I still appreciate what we sounded like then, but I am also very pleased to hear that we have evolved since. We still perform a couple of the songs live. They are challenging songs to sing, but I do enjoy a challenge. In fact we just performed acoustic versions of “My Demon” and “In My Death I Dream Of You”. It was a lovely opportunity to re-imagine the songs and perform them in a whole new makeup all together.

Reuel

Is there any song on the upcoming album you are excited to know how people will react to in particular?

Kirsten Jørgensen

I’m a little excited to see how people will find the other Norwegian song on “Vaketimen”. I’m usually a little apprehensive when it comes to the songs I write in Norwegian, but it’s an awesome track, with a good story. I hope our listeners will latch on to the feel of it, even if they don’t understand the lyrics. I will get around to writing a translation at some point, but it isn’t first on my to-do list!

Reuel

Can you tell us a little about your musical background? What musicians had the most influence on you growing up and inspired you to become an artist yourself?

Kirsten Jørgensen

I’ve been singing since before I could talk and watched my dad lug his guitar around playing in multiple blues and rock bands over the years. He got me listening to those genres with bands such as The Kinks, Beatles, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Then I found my way into bands such as Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl Jam, which eventually had me venturing into metal bands such as Deftones, Incubus, Marilyn Manson, and Type O Negative. Those are just a tiny fraction of artists I look up to and which have played an important part in shaping me and my musical tastes. However, there is one very defining moment for me, at the age of five, when seeing Kiss performing “Crazy Nights” on TV. I remember being completely captivated by the energy and performance and thinking it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

Reuel

Wow, such great names! How do you feel about the representation of women in heavy music today, and what do you think can be done to promote more inclusivity and support for female musicians?

Kirsten Jørgensen

There are so many amazing female artists, both established and emerging, within the metal scene, though still not enough by far. I am pleased to see we’re being acknowledged for our efforts at music awards, festivals, and tours around the world. It’s inspiring and lovely to watch women rise. I think acceptance and support within the female community is key. We have to stop judging each other, comparing skills, looks and, last but not least, holding female musicians to a higher standard than male musicians! Everyone in the music industry works damn hard for their buck, so how about appreciating the hard work that’s being put in and the sacrifices made to get to the level they’re at? Maybe what I am trying to say is that there’s too much rivalry within the industry and we need to stand up for one another.

Reuel

It’s 2025, and unfortunately, in many places on Earth, women still suffer from discrimination in many shapes and forms. What message would you like to deliver to your fans who are facing any kind of discrimination?

Kirsten Jørgensen

It might feel hopeless and that change isn’t happening fast enough. However, there are so many fighters out there paving the way. Gather behind them and have their backs!! Look to each other for support and stand together!

Reuel

Great words! Thank you for your time, Kirsten, and for this interview! Is there anything else you’d like to add in the end?

Kirsten Jørgensen

Thank you so much for this opportunity and for fun and challenging questions. Now, more than ever, it is important that you support your favourite musicians! Thank you for listening to Evig Natt and for sticking by our side. “Vaketimen” will be out soon, so keep checking in with us!
