In my opinion, metal can have many forms and shapes, and the three class acts I had the pleasure of seeing last Friday in Milan have embodied this very statement. I arrived at Alcatraz at about 6 PM, and there was an incredibly long queue to enter! I think I stood in this queue for at least 15 to 20mins, and then finally I could enter the venue.

Lili Refrain

One minute before 7 PM and the first act begins: Lili Refrain takes place on stage among the cheers of the audience, and since she started playing, we’ve been transported into her world. What a stupefying and profound performance! Her voice, mixed with all the instruments she played looped in her station, was absolutely mesmerising. I was standing in awe for the whole duration of the set. She was visibly happy and excited to be on such a big stage in her home country, and she delivered a world-class performance. All hail Lili Refrain!

Eivør

Five minutes before 8 PM, it’s soon time for Eivør to play for the crowd of Milan. She began her set with “The Last Kingdom” the same day it was announced the song won at the Game Awards. Brilliant choice! Her voice was passionate and delicate yet full of power and emotions. I have been listening to her music for quite a while, and it was an immense pleasure for me to see Eivør on stage! She told us that she wrote “Í Tokuni” about a misadventure she had in the mountains when she was a child. She also played various instruments in such a flawless way. This evening keeps on getting better and better!

Heilung

Remember that we all are brothers“,… and with these words, Heilung takes the stage one by one. After the opening ritual, the band delighted us with some new tracks from their latest release, “Drif”, alongside classics like “Krigsgaldr” and “Hamrer Hippyer“. Maria Franz’s vocals were exquisite, as well as the ones of Kai, Christopher and the whole warrior group. It is very hard to describe Heilung’s show because it is not only a concert but a spiritual experience as well as a healing moment. Please, if this tour comes to a city near you, do not miss out. You will be part of something that’s going to stay with you forever.

Benedetta Baldin

Hi! My name is Benedetta, I’m 29 and I live in Northern Italy. My passion has always been music: I started taking guitar lessons when I was 6. Now I work as a sales representative, but in my free time I interview talented people, I spread the word about my favorite band (MoonSun), and I go to concerts or travel around Europe. I am a huge collector of anything Tolkien-related, autographs, merchandise, and CDs. I am quite an original person and don’t mind being the voice outside of the choir (even though I play in the church’s choir!).
