I’m here with the fantastic Cursed Abyss. How are you doing, guys?

Very well. Awesome.

Benedetta

So, you’re playing Wacken Open Air. It is the 35th anniversary. How does it feel?

Cursed Abyss

It’s incredible and overwhelming. Especially for us as a young band, it still kind of feels a little unreal. It’s just a dream that came true. Especially since Patricia and I (Eileen) are also visitors here for years now. And today we were on the stage ourselves. It was totally crazy to be on the other side.

Benedetta

Do you think that we will ever have some equality between men and women in the metal world?

Cursed Abyss

I think at one point we will have. Because when you look back 30-40 years ago, it was so male dominated. Now there are so many female fronted bands with female members. I think this trend goes on and on. So, at some point it’s not a trend anymore. It’s just normal. Hopefully. But I believe and we believe that at one point this dream comes true.

Has it happened to you sometimes that when you went to play a show or do some recording that someone treated you differently just because you are woman?

Eileen Zander

Yeah, unfortunately, you have to deal with it. Especially today, I was talking to my boyfriend. He is a crew member. And the people thought that he is part of a band and I’m the crew member or his girlfriend only, to be here with him. And I also had this experience several times. Once I gave money to a booker, but we collected our tickets. And he was like, “And what’s your part of the band? Like, what are you doing for them?” Not “Are you part of the band?” I was very disappointed.

And for one concert I did guest vocals. It was really big. I was on the guest list. At the beginning someone said to me, “Yeah, but you just don’t drink so much. And just scream a bit and be a bit in front of the stage“. I was like, “Yeah, I don’t drink that much. And I am on the stage later“. “Do you know what you are doing? I don’t believe you“. And I just said, “In a couple of hours you are going to see what I mean“. And they did and they didn’t believe it afterwards. They did not apologize to me. But I saw them later and I was like, “What do you say now?” And they were like, “Sorry, I got an appointment“.

Cursed Abyss

If you take a look at the scene now, it’s still not equal if you compare the amounts. But you do have a lot of big women in the metal scene. So I do think it’s improving. For me personally, I think that we should have a lot more female fronted bands. Because I just love the sound of female voices. It’s just awesome. I think it’s not enough. We should definitely have more equality. Especially in this genre, metal. So I hope in the future that we definitely have a lot more female fronted bands. I don’t know if we are reaching true equality. I would hope so. But I think you can see today that we have to really enjoy defining bands. Like Spiritbox, with Jinjer, with Arch Enemy. So I think that’s a great step in the right direction. And about being treated differently. I can’t really talk about that now. Because I don’t get treated differently. I do notice that sometimes they get some weird looks. It’s so normal for us in the band to be equal. I never really once thought about if it would be better if they were male. It was just like, okay, they are in the band. He’s in the band. She’s in the band.
